Counting our Blessings

by Tel Asiado, Nov 19, 2008

Sometimes we want to pray but cannot gather words we want to say. Or, for some, they may not feel like praying. Here is a suggestion that can be tried how to count our blessings. As hymn-writer Johnson Oatman, Jr. wrote: “count your blessings, name them one by one…”.

It is normal and a common fact how our daily lives are extremely focused on our everyday worries and concerns. Yet, no matter how embedded our problems and challenges are, it is amazing how we can also get carried away when we begin saying out loud what we are thankful for. Right away our focus shifts from our problems to God’s graciousness, his promises and love.

The gospel hymn “He Leadeth Me” was written by Joseph Gilmore on March 26, 1862. Sage thoughts

Within my workstation is a pewter decor gifted by my childhood friend. It has a saying of Lao-Tzu, a Chinese wise man of olden times. When I read sayings of some of these great sages of Ancient days, I am so impressed with how apt are many of the wise insights they imparted to our present time.  Lao-Tzu says:

“He who knows others is clever, but he who knows himself is enlightened. He who overcomes others is strong, but he who overcomes himself is mightier still.”

I can only think of One who is the Mightiest.

Faith again

And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Luke 7:50

Evening Prayer

Here’s a beautiful simple short poem written by Glenda Moore that says so much. I found it in one of my collections of poems & verses.

“Evening Prayer”

Thank you, Lord,

For giving me today,

Each splendid hour,

To do with what I may,

Each cherished moment,

To use at my behest,

And thank you, Lord,

For evening and my rest.”

(Thank you Glenda Moore.)
